Golden Globes: The Nominees

Leonardo DiCaprio and Clint Eastwood are seeing double this morning — the actor picked up Golden Globe nods for his lead roles in The Departed and Blood Diamond, while the director of the war movies Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima will also battle himself for a statue. Alejandro González Iñárritu's Babel led the way in the film categories with seven noms, while The Departed brought in six and Dreamgirls five — though none of the musical's were for writing or directing. As expected, royal subjects Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) and Helen Mirren (The Queen) are strong contenders for the acting prizes. But there were some surprises: Maggie Gyllenhaal edged out Naomi Watts (The Painted Veil) to pick up a best actress nod for Sherrybaby, and there was no love in the major drama categories for the 9/11 film United 93, which had been racking up kudos from critics groups.

As for TV, ABC scored big, with four nominations for Grey's Anatomy, three for Desperate Housewives, and two for Lost. New shows Ugly Betty, Big Love, and Heroes got nods. Unlike last year, the Wisteria Laners don't completely dominate the Best Actress category (phew!) — Ugly Betty's America Ferrera was fresh blood in that category — and Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), and Bill Paxton (Big Love) got lead acting nods for their new series.

The Golden Globes will be handed out Monday, Jan. 15, and televised live on NBC.
